Bovid definition is - any of a family (Bovidae) of ruminants that have hollow unbranched permanently attached horns present in usually both sexes and that include antelopes, oxen, sheep, and goats. Characteristics typical of deer include long, powerful legs, a diminutive tail and long ears.
The name "antelope" is often used to describe many members of this family, but it is not a definable, taxonomically-based term - if it's not an ox, goat, or sheep, then it's an antelope; antelope are found in all eight modern bovid subfamilies alongside distinctly non-antilopine species. Though of a similar build, deer are strongly distinguished from antelopes by their antlers, which are temporary and regularly regrown unlike the permanent horns of bovids.

Bovids are primarily Old World in their distribution, although a few species are found in North America. Deer constitute the second most diverse family of artiodactyla after bovids.
