The Egyptian Vulture, or Guirre as it is known on Fuerteventura, is in danger of extinction on the island, so its habitats are being protected. It is an Egyptian Vulture subspecies which is endemic to the eastern Canary archipelago, in Macaronesia in the north Atlantic Ocean, where it is a scarce and endangered non-migratory resident. The island is home to one of the two surviving populations of the threatened Canarian Egyptian vulture. Fuerteventura is the main distribution area of the Egyptian vulture in the Canaries: 67 nesting areas were recorded in 2017, mainly concentrated in the central part of the island.
