In our new Sea Otter Encounter, you’ll get an up-close and personal look at Shedd’s sea otter program and assist with a playful training session alongside Shedd’s animal trainers. Due to the special nature of this program, space is limited and early reservations are recommended. After an encounter with a river otter sent a man to a hospital, officials at Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California are warning people to stay out of the water at a popular lake. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials note that sightings are becoming more numerous. Small groups will be combined to form a program group of about 10 guests. A visitor to Lassen Volcanic National Park was attacked by a river otter at Manzanita Lake June 25. As trapping decreased, otter populations rebounded. Our exclusive encounters offer you the incredible opportunity to go behind the scenes and experience our animals like never before.
The Sea Otter Encounter lasts approximately 30 minutes. In this interactive encounter, you will meet, feed and interact directly with an otter.
Park admission is not included with your program reservation but is required. All otter encounters last approximately 15 minutes and include educational activities and up close interactive feedings monitored by our trained staff while you learn more about these unique creatures from the handler.
The cost of the interaction is $19.95. Get a look into our exhibits that few others get to witness, and help our staff feed and interact with many of our animals, including birds, sharks and even sea turtles. For several years, Texas was an otter-less state, but through clean-up efforts, NAROs have been able to make an amazing comeback.

Otters are seen in Washington State. Price does not include SeaQuest Admission which is required for all encounters. For Texas otters, in general, conditions are improving. River otters were once trapped for their fur, so their populations dwindled in Texas. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, although the river otter is currently found in the eastern half of the state, it was probably once distributed throughout the Panhandle, north-central, and southern Texas. Along the Texas Gulf Coast region, otters also live in marshes, bayous, and brackish inlets.
During your personal animal experience, you will go behind the scenes of the sea otter habitat in Cold Water Quest, enjoy an educational presentation about sea otters, help prepare a sea otter meal, participate in a training session, and meet one of our resident sea otters. Opportunities in this participatory experience include handing the otter a favorite fish treat, feeling the dense fur and even touching a paw, all while safely behind an acrylic partition.
