The Queensland Government has released new koala habitat mapping for South East Queensland to support implementation of the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy, and amended koala conservation protections within the planning framework. The Nature Conservation and Other Legislation (Koala Protection) Amendment Regulation commenced on 7 February 2020 and amends the Environmental Offsets Regulation 2014, Planning Regulation 2017, Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2017 and Vegetation Management Regulation 2012 to provide increased protection to koala habitat areas in South East Queensland.

Under Queensland’s Nature Conservation Act 1992,koalas are listed as vulnerable state-wide and are a protected species. Consultation closed on 31 January 2020. Koalas are affected by habitat loss and disease, but they're also threatened by cars and dogs. Bibliography

During the consultation period, the Queensland Government hosted community information sessions at Aspley, Beenleigh, Bokarina, Currumbin, Daisy Hill, Ipswich and Morayfield, and spoke to hundreds of community members about koala conservation. This mapping replaces previous koala assessable development area mapping.
