There has been little research carried out into this particular species of monkey. There are 4 species of woolly monkey that can be found in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Venezuela. They are hunted for food and pets.

They are from the Atelidae (or known as Atelid’s) family of monkeys. At Primate Store, you can buy pet monkeys like baby capuchins, macaques, squirrel monkeys, marmosets (finger monkeys), tamarmins and other species directly from breeders and brokers that have an USDA license. Brown Woolly Monkey is also referred to as the common Woolly Monkey.

The woolly monkey is most well known for its round-shaped head and dense fur that covers the body of the woolly monkey.. Woolly monkeys are found throughout Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and parts of Venezuela where they live an arboreal lifestyle.

They have a thick brown coat with dark gray appendages. They have a large prehensile tail, this gives them the ability to maneuver aptly through trees. Woolly Monkeys use their prehensile tail to bridge gaps between trees and hang from a tree branch while they select a piece of fruit. Arm and legs are about equal in length. Woolly monkey lives in dense tropical rainforests and seasonally flooded forests on the high altitudes. However, unlike the human hand and fingers, the underside of the prehensile tail is not well endowed with sweat and sebaceous glands.
The tail length of the gray woolly monkey is on average from 66 to 68 cm in length. They are dedicated tree-dwellers and rarely descend to the ground, preferring to stay up in the canopy using their prehensile tails to hang around and move from branch to branch. Gray woolly monkeys prefer to take their time as they deftly advance through the rainforest’s upper canopy. Juvenile and infant yellow-tailed woolly monkeys do not have the characteristic yellow tail-hairs nor the genital tufts of adult individuals (Thomas 1926; Leo Luna 1982b cited in DeLuycker 2007; DeLuycker 2007).

Rarely do they leap between trees; however, they make good use of their prehensile tail which allows them to bridge gaps between trees and lets them hang from a tree branch while they select a piece of fruit. Tail. The male gray woolly monkey weighs an average of 9.5 kg. The Old World monkeys have versatile thumbs, and these thumbs compensate for the absence of tail.

The woolly spider monkey is 45–63 cm (17–25 inches) long, excluding the 65–80-cm prehensile tail; females average 8 kg (17.6 pounds), males 9.6 kg. Each monkey is thought to have its own characteristic dermatoglyphics. | Video from @dimosb on Instagram.

The muriqui, or woolly spider monkey, and the woolly monkey are two other South American monkeys with well-developed prehensile tails.
