The Baiji or Goddess of the Yangtze was known by a number of different names such as Yangtze Dolphin, Chinese River Dolphin, Whitefin Dolphin and the Yangtze River Dolphin. It was one of five species of dolphins known to have made fresh water their exclusive habitat. Chinese scientists are struggling to save both animals and their river from an onslaught of fishing, industry and pollution. The Chinese river dolphin, or baiji, holds the unenviable record of being the first dolphin species driven to extinction by human beings. Fossil records suggest that the dolphin first appeared 25 million years ago and migrated from the Pacific Ocean to the Yangtze River 20 million years ago. The mighty Yangtze River in China was the baiji’s home for 20 million years. It took less than 50 years for humans to wipe them out. Historically, the Yangtze River Dolphin, also known as the Baiji, primarily inhabited the lower half of the Yangtze River, in Asia. This, therefore, serves as the source of one of its common names. Although the Baiji is currently believed to be extinct there is a possibility that a handful are alive within captivity although this is not known for sure. But there's no other river like the Yangtze in China. It's home to both a unique river dolphin (the baiji) and the world's only freshwater porpoise (the finless porpoise).
